our curriculum
Our curriculum's foundation is based on the learning outcomes from the Nurturing Early Learners Framework in the areas of Literacy, Numeracy, Aesthetic and Creative Expression, Discovery of the World, Health & Motor Skills and Social and Emotional Competencies.
This is delivered through our in-house creative curriculum which encompasses NAEYC's (1987) definition of developmentally appropriate practices. Put simply, developmentally appropriate practices means teaching in ways that respect the developmental stages of preschool children.
Outdoor time

Outdoor play is essential for children's health and well-being. The sense of peace and pleasure children experience when they are in the sunshine and take in fresh air is immeasurable. At The Sherman Preschool, we believe that the time children spent outdoors everyday is just as important as the time they spend in the classroom learning. Our teachers are trained to extend the learning and support your child's development during our daily outdoor time.
Indulge in our lovely outdoor space with an exciting playground structure and other various play equipments amidst a lush greenery. We also have a sand pit and water play area as well as a racing track for your little ones to practise their riding skills as well as for taking part races like sack race. In any case, our open space present endless possibilities of active learning and play!
social emotional competencies

Positive social relationships create the best environment for children's learning. At The Sherman Preschool, we nurture social competence by helping children understand how to treat others and how they want to be treated by others, acquire skills to cooperate, negotiate, make and keep friends as well as resolve problems and conflicts in a prosocial manner. Acquiring these skills takes time, practice and lots of guidance and instant feedback.
In our curriculum, we intentionally focus on the 7 values which we hold dear to our Sherman culture. They are about being Sociable, Humble, Empathetic, Resilient, Mindful, Adaptable and Nurturing. We believe that these values will make our little Shermans stand out in the best possible way now and in the future.
literacy

The goals of our literacy curriculum is for children to develop vocabulary, phonological awareness, understanding of print in all forms as well as using language as a form of communication and enjoyment. Our foundation in phonics is delivered through Letterland materials and reinforced by concrete Montessori language materials (extended day sessions). We believe all children can be guided to use their literacy skills as a form of expression or better yet, enjoyment.
the arts

Art is a natural vehicle for young children to express their feelings and thoughts. Children pick up skills when they work with different materials and art mediums as well as take on the role of the "creator" when they express themselves through art. Our teachers will engage them in mindful and supportive conversations which will trigger their awareness about what they are doing and help them reflect on their creation. Most importantly, we focus on the process and not the end result. and we believe that our children's mind is much more creative and artistic we know!
numeracy

Everyday experiences provide context for children to learn math concepts. The key component of preschool math curriculum involves number concepts, understanding of patterns and relationships, geometry and spacial awareness, measurement, data collection, organisation and representation. This is delivered through our in-house math curriculum, "Growing with Math" and reinforced by concrete Montessori Math materials (extended day sessions).
life skills

Cooking is a natural laboratory for teaching a myriad of content. Literacy, numeracy, motor skills and life science can all be incorporated seamlessly into each cookery session. Our teachers purposefully plan the cookery activities and respond to children's cues so that all children make the connection between cooking and learning. Last but not least, children can learn about food and nutrition as well as health and safety rules while working in the kitchen.
